Ulysses S. Grant- General of the Union
A fierce man who never backed down, Ulysses Grant played an important role in the Civil War. Born in Ohio, Ulysses Grant was a cigar smoker and a hard drinker. As a boy, he never really got along with his father, and loved animals. He served in the Mexican-American War, but left because he didn't want to be kicked out. He went back to Ohio and failed as a farmer before joining the Union and being quickly promoted to Brigadier General. Grant was often depressed without his wife, and drank frequently. Grant also had went to West Point and finished 21st in his class out of 39. War to him was simple. He even said, "The art of war is simple. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on." West Point was also where Grant lost his first name, Hiram. During the war, he was called U.S. for Unconditional Surrender because he believed in surrender as prisoners or die. His 1 goal during the war was crush Lee's army in the North, and when he did at the Appottamox Courthouse, he was still a gentleman to Lee. Grant was also known for saying, "Let us have peace."
