Abraham Lincoln- Leader of the Union
Abraham Lincoln was one of the most influential leaders of the North during the Civil War. He rallied the Union to its victory in April of 1865. Throughout his life, he was adamantly against 3 things- States having too much power, slavery, and war. Right up until the first shot was fired, he still argued against a war. Slavery disgusted Lincoln. He was known to say, "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." He believed slavery was unconstitutional and went against our original 3 freedoms. Lincoln, as well as the leader of the Union, was a very influential speaker. Some of his great speeches include the Gettysburg Address, and his 2nd Inaugural Speech. He communicated with his troops through Morse code, strategizing from hundreds of miles away. This new technology pretty much won Lincoln the war. During the war, he passed the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves from plantations, which was a bold move because it was dependent on the North winning the war. He believed in the North, though, and had a strong sense of morals. This was why this man was, in my opinion, the most significant leader of the Civil War.

"I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light I have. I must stand with anybody hat stands right, and part with him when he goes wrong." Morse Code and Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln quickly saw the potential of this new form of strategizing. He ordered that it be set up in Union camps and at the White House. "Morse" code was basically a series of long and short taps which each meant something. It was invented in 1835 by Samuel Morse for the telegraph. |
"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
