Robert E. Lee- The Best General Ever
One of the most effective generals in the Civil War was Robert E. Lee. Lee was a Virginia-born man who was a soft-spoken, religious, Southern gentleman. At West Point, he finished 2nd in his class with no demerits. He had fought out West under Jefferson Davis, and was known for capturing John Brown at Harper's Ferry. Lincoln even asked him to join the Union army, but Lee refused because he would not fight against his home state, which is sectionalism. When he joined the Confederacy, he was given command of the Army of Northern Virginia, then eventually the whole Confederate force. Despite being one of the best generals ever, he didn't like war. He spoke out, saying, "It is well that war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond of it." Some of Lee's legacies were his strategies and doing more with less. Even upon surrender, he ordered his troops to be gentlemen. Lee was a gentleman from beginning to end.
